So when looking into and buying more mermaid-themed books, Ingo was one I kept coming back to. As a 20-something, however, I managed to fail to notice this was definitely angled towards kids. As an adult reader, there's times it can get a little frustrating, but once I realized what I was reading, and got further into the story, I got pulled in and held, just like Sapphire in Ingo. Also, as an adult reader, it's a breath of fresh air to see something that is more... not quite coming of age, yet, but more like that than anything romantic and relationship-drama. It still had it's own drama, with the disappearance of the young sibling's father, the struggle they and their mother go through after, the appearance of another man in their mother's life, all tied into discovering another world beneath the waters, the wonders and dangers it poses.

I'm not exactly sure how this story can stretch on for the four or five more books I see are out, and honestly this one wrapped up nicely enough to be a stand alone (if accepting a few stray threads) for those who don't wish to continue. I do plan to go on with the series and see where it goes.

It's not one of my favorite, but like I said, the intended audience is much younger than I am, and I still found it enjoyable enough. I specifically liked Dunmore's take on how mer mind's and perceptions differ from human's. It has that feel of traditional lore of fae -- a sort of chaotic neutral. And how Faro constantly pointed out flaws in human's depictions of mer.

If reading this with your child, be ready for a conversation of loss! Of what could happen if a family member disappears or passes away.

I chose this rating because it was amazingly wrote.
I've only read this for a school project but it was so good I had to get the whole series!!!!

My daughter loves mermaid books and movies. I lean more on the realistic side of life and struggle with the fantasy genre. I decided to read the book first to make sure it was okay for my daughter to read and to find a way to relate to something she enjoys. I was surprised by how much I actually enjoyed the book. It is not your everyday mermaid story, there is a lot more to the characters. I also love the way the author describes the underwater world of Ingo. My daughter is reading it now and we both agree there are days we would love to be "away in Ingo". We are also a Christian family and there are a few red flags in this book for me earth magic, mom's boyfriend, Sapphire's behavior).
This is one of my favorite books! I've read this over 100 times! If you like tales that have mermaids in them this is a must read.
Love Ingo!
Inventive clever series - my 10 1/2 yr. old reading it.
Really beautiful at times and fantastic imagination, but I don't understand why she chooses to write the story in first person, present tense. There's no actual purpose to it, as far as I could tell and it actually conflicts with some of the foreshadowing. Appreciated that the characters had complex motivations; she didn't water it down for the young audience.
Mermaids have grabbed my attention this summer, so i've been researching mermaid book series and came across Ingo. The first chapter was a bit confusing, but after that the book ran smoothly. I like the direction the author took on Mer mythology, at least it wasn't your typical mermaid-comes-on-land-and-falls-in-love thing. I liked the concepts of Ingo and Earth. And I found Granny Carne's role very intriguing. To me, the setting of the story makes it more believable as well. I would be interested in reading book 2.
