I am a long-time follower of Melissa Atkins Wardy's work, a frequent participant in her Facebook community at Pigtail Pals Ballcap Buddies, and an academic with a background in media research. I had high hopes for this book and was excited that she would finally have all her thoughts written down for people who are new to the issue of media's influence on children. But I was worried that since I've been immersed in these issues for over a decade, this book would not offer me anything new.

I am happy to say that even as a "veteran", and even as a parent of only boys, I got a LOT out of reading this book. What I have always appreciated about Wardy's approach is that she recaps her own real-life experiences as a parent and provides "scripts" of how she interacts with children (both her own and other people's).

I know what kinds of people I want my boys to become, but since they are preschoolers, I often find it hard to talk to them about it at their level. Wardy has the words. And now she's shared them with all of her readers, enabling us to find new ways to talk about the difficult issues of gender representation, respect for others, and self-confidence in the face of peer pressure.

Redefining Girly How Parents Can Fight the Stereotyping and Sexualizing of Girlhood from Birth to Tween Melissa Atkins Wardy Jennifer Siebel Newsom 9781613745526 Books Reviews

I wish I had had this book when my children were young! The advice that Melissa gives regarding talking to preschool teachers and pediatricians and other adults with whom your children interact is spot-on and easy to implement, and it could have a profound effect on kids and their gender conceptions. Melissa's advice about guiding girls to create their own brand is also wonderful for parents whose daughters are starting to figure out who they are and who they want to be. Redefining Girly is more a book for parents with younger children than for parents of pre-teens or teenagers; that said, after I read the book I gave it to my teenage daughter because she likes to argue with me when I explain why Barbie has a damaging effect on girls' perceptions of their bodies and on their psyches. She believed Melissa even though she didn't necessarily believe me. That made the book worth any amount of money for me!
this book is great. I found Melissa Wardy's website when I was pregnant with my daughter, who is almost 3. I love that with some ideas from the blog....and now this book....I am raising my daughter by "redefining girly". Yesterday I was shopping and trying to find something that didn't say "princess" or "cute". I did manage to find two shirts for her. One that said "I have girl power" and another that said "little genius". Had I not found Mrs. Wardy's blog, I don't know that I would have been making choices I am today for my daughter in her apparel or toys. And her older brother is benefiting too. Darth Vader needed a princess crown yesterday because he needed "power to run the universe". I think any parent with a little girl should read this book. It isn't about not being girly. It's about little girls choosing what type of girl they want to be....versus what the media and toy manufacturers want them to be.
For me, the best part of the book is all the ways Melissa reminds us how to think critically. We can do that for ourselves and teach our children to do it for themselves. Best of all, we can do it together!
So many of her suggestions are easy to incorporate into your daily life, even if you don't have children at home. Most of us have children in our lives and we can help them see their wisdom and their real power.
Melissa helps us with ways to have real conversations with kids and how listening to them shows them we value them.
Read this book from cover to cover or pick it up and read any section you open it to. Either way, you will learn something you can put into action right away!
I just read Redefining Girly, and I feel like I now have an arsenal of helpful information, resources, and ideas at my disposal! Everything is presented in a comfortable, non-judgemental way that guides without being harsh. While some books focus only on presenting the problems of gender stereotyping, Redefining Girly goes a step farther, giving helpful tips, alternatives to questionable toys, and even ideas for how to phrase conversations with friends and family. Melissa Wardy obviously lives in the "real world" and has dealt with many of these issues firsthand. I highly recommend this book to anyone raising girls or involved in working with children, such as teachers.
Every parent of a girl and professional that works with young girls should read this book.
"Redefining Girly" is simplistic and narrow in its scope, and not particularly helpful to anyone who already has a basic knowledge of, or curiosity about, gender stereotyping. The majority of the book consists of Wardy speaking in excruciatingly painful detail about her family on every subject, or advertising her online store. It truly is more of an autobiography of Wardy's day-to-day parenting adventures rather than a book that compiles various data and provides objective solutions, as one would have surmised from the book's title and description. Her constant references to her own children and her model dialogues were tiresome most of the time, and utterly ridiculous at other times. I found her writing to be much too judgmental of any view that might deviate from her own, and consistently self-congratulatory. This book also lacks the width of knowledge and ideas to appeal to a broader audience. It very much addresses the lifestyle and habits of middle-class and upper-middle class, Caucasian, suburbanites.
