Why Mermaids Sing A Sebastian St Cyr Mystery CS Harris 9780451222268 Books
CS Harris delivers an amazing story in this third outing for Sebastian St. Cyr, in 1811 Regency England. The murder and mutilation of the sons of 2 powerful men, of a vicar and a sea captain, have stumped the Bow Street runners. Sebastian, Lord Devlin, is called in again. The hunt uncovers a set of awful secrets tied to an ill-fated voyage that led the dying starving survivors to a bestial crime. Sebastian's lover, the beautiful actress Kat Boleyn, has her secrets, too, as do his father the Earl of Hendon, and Lord Jarvis, the powerful spy hunter for the Crown. This entry in the series ties up several major narrative arcs developed in the first two books, and sets us up for new adventures and characters in the next books. Books which I will immediately download with pleasurable anticipation!Another word of praise for the Audible narration which I enjoyed through many sections of Why Mermaids Sing. Davinia Porter is the fabulous voice that brings these characters alive. She is the narrator of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series as well. The Sebastian St. Cyr series remind me of the Outlander books in terms of excellent story, fine period details, superbly drawn recurring characters, and action adventure. And each book has a fascinating murder mystery providing the narrative structure. Wonderful work!

WOW!!! I am really enjoying the books in this series (Sebastian St. Cyr). This is book #3.
This is a great mystery that really keeps you guessing about who the bad guy is -- right up until the end. Then, of course, there is the sub-plot that is as interesting (to me) as the main mystery is.
Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, is asked by his friend (a magistrate) to help investigate the death and mutilation of a young man (boy really). Before the mystery is solved, there are several dead bodies. You'll be amazed at what ties all of these young men together and how they came to be chosen as the victims. You'll also be amazed at what some people will do and sacrifice to cover up their shame.
The sub-plot concerns Devlin and his love Cat. Devlin loves Cat unreservedly and she loves him with the same intensity. He wants to marry her. However, since I've read all the book-blurbs on the other books in the series, I knew they didn't marry and wondered what happened. Well -- we find out in this book and -- well -- believe me -- it is a doozie! You absolutely won't believe it. I don't think I've read quite that situation in a book before.
Anyway -- this is a wonderful series -- and this is a great book in that series. I couldn't put it down.
It’s so nice to end 2018 with a really good book. The St.
Cyr mysteries are the kind that I intentionally read slowly so that I can delay their ending. As usual, this one did not disappoint and kept me interested until the end.
Even though they are 10+ books in the series each one of them can be read as stand-alone novels. There is a through-line plot involving Sebastian St. Cy’s personal life but each mystery is completely resolved by the end,
Bottom line a heck of a good read.
I am so close to loving this series, but frankly, the graphic violence puts me off. There were pages of the book that I ended up just skipping across because I didn't want the explicit images of violence in my head. I'm looking for a good detective with a great mystery to solve, not gratuitous barbarism. That said, Ms. Harris is a good author. Decent Regency mysteries are hard to find since most authors aren't inclined to do the research to eliminate anachronisms from their work. While it's not completely free of them, it's much better than most other books claiming to be "Regency period." Also, I can't wait (at least I hope this happens!) for Kat Boleyn's story line to be wrapped up.I have never cared for her character (her name put me off from the start), and I don't think she contributes much to the story other than to provide someone for Sebastian to have sex with.
That said, I keep returning to these books. It's usually when I'm desperate for something to read. I've resigned myself to skipping the parts I don't like because overall, the books are well written.
Possibly 5 stars for its genre - certainly a page-turner. I'm fairly committed to reading the whole series - & glad there are 12 books! Lots of twists (no pun intended), and while the mystery predominates in each book, the relationship-romance sub-plot(s) with St.Cyr also figure strongly, and trans-generational infidelities, & otherwise convoluted relationships are interwoven with the plot at all levels 9perhaps even more so in the next book). This one turns on a theme of revenge, and I suppose could be considered rather "dark", except that it is so swashbuckling that there is hardly time to notice that feature. Well plotted. Evocative of the period - or at least what one thinks the period would have been like. Sebastian, Tom, Kat, Gibson, Jarvis, and all the usual characters are present, well fleshed-out, with their stories/lives developing in concert, and complemented by a rich cast of other players. I continue to lament the author's determination to doom the partnership of Sebastian & Kat, and note that her devices for so doing skirt dangerously close to melodrama in content, enaction, and reprise - but the books are so engaging that I'll carry on with them. If you like these very well, you might want to have a look at Rafael Sabatini's novels. "Scaramouche" comes to mind - and perhaps his most famous, "Captain Blood." A bit more literary (dated?) in style, but quite swashbuckling & certainly no more over-the-top that Harris' work here.
